Hands Up: Juana Martín

July 7, 2022

“This is my first official collection in Paris, and this show at the Lycée Victor Duruy feels very emotional for me,” says Juana Martin. “We wanted an open space, filled with light. From the atelier to the models, we are all inhabited by this collection and the feeling it provides us since the beginning.”

She continues: “I started my career in 1999. This collection is the DNA of the house, it is a celebration of a cosmopolitan Andalusia, modern, urban; seven provinces united and yet all different. If flamenco dresses are a great source of inspiration, it is about going beyond the image to reveal a tradition in motion and reveal a culture. The hand is the key: we have worked with ancestral handcraft techniques (Cordoba leather, pure silver jewelry), to project them in a sustainable way in the contemporary world. It is important to reinvent, to reuse what has preceded us.”

Martin will be presenting 26 looks this season. “From where I come from, from my gypsy culture, I am happy to be included in this Parisian Haute Couture calendar. I was born in Cordoba, my parents had a sewing atelier, they sold their clothes at the local market. We were five brothers and two sisters. We lived comfortably, because they worked hard every day, they wanted to give us the best – an education, solid principles that built us. I learned how to sew, how to cut leather, I keep learning every day. I am at the same time the daughter of my parents, the mother of a three-year-old child, a woman. My hands have given me the freedom to create, to be independent, to make my own decisions. We often hear ‘take your life in your hands.’ For me, living is also about continuing to learn every day.”
